Finland’s Prime Minister, Sanna Marin, has introduced six-hour work shifts and a four-day workweek in the region. The world’s youngest serving PM is planning to follow Sweden’s lead, where the six-hour experiment started in 2015. Marin argues that ‘ people deserve to spend more time with their families and give time to their hobbies, according to European sources. The center-left PM claims that the ‘ next step ‘ in professional life will be this change of working hours.

Most citizens in Finland are currently working five days a week for eight hours a day. Country’s Scandinavian neighbor, the early results of the Swedish experiment allegedly suggest that it increases productivity, well-being, and health, but is expensive. International studies also suggest that some opponents claim that rising working hours and days can have a negative impact on business and economic development. Nonetheless, the new plan was accepted by Finland’s partner and education minister, Marin, Li Andersson.

Similarly, in the United Kingdom, the largest rival of the ruling party, Labour had vowed to introduce a four-day working week with ‘ no income loss ‘ within ten years of the December elections. The defeated party was also planning to cut to 32 hours the average workweek. Conservatives won on December elections, however, with a thumping majority, leaving the Labor plan unsuccessful. Meanwhile, the labor unions and industrial employers reached an agreement in Finland on pay rises and working conditions after multiple strikes.

Marin was elected a new prime minister of Finland, making her the youngest in the world at the age of 34. The leader of the Social Democratic Party was confirmed as the PM following the resignation of Antti Rinne in June. The SDP council voted 32-29 to name Marin as the PM. Speaking to local media outlets, Marin said it’s a long road ahead to rebuild people’s trust after winning a narrow margin ahead of rival Antti Lindtman.
