Ahead of August 2020, when the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne will walk into its eleventh year with a grand opening, the team organized a prelude event in Mumbai before their main event in Melbourne in August.

While it’s been 10 wonderful years, festival director Mitu Bhowmik Lange is gearing up to make the 2020 celebrations just as grand. The festival’s association with La Trobe University culminated with the launch of the Shah Rukh Khan La Trobe University PhD Scholarship, announced at the 2019 festival. It has been dedicated to a female researcher – Gopika Kottantharayil Bhasi from Thrissur (Kerala), working on farming practices through animal science, ecology, and molecular studies. She was chosen from over 800 Indian women for the honor.

In a statement, festival director, Mitu said, “It has been an overwhelming journey that has gathered strength from all quarters in the past 10 years. IFFM continues its dedicated work towards supporting diverse voices and cinema. I am ecstatic about the initiatives we have taken, especially our association with La Trobe University. Having Mr. Khan support a young researcher’s dream is a step towards us collectively furthering our social responsibilities. I and all of us at IFFM wish Gopika the very best”.

Actor Shah Rukh Khan, in a statement, said, “I would like to personally thank Mitu. I take myself as the first-hand ambassador of Melbourne and I attended the Indian film festival of Melbourne last year and it was such a warm and hospitable experience. I’m a staunch believer in education and I would like to congratulate Gopika. The way forward for everyone is to gain an education and there’s never an end to learning. The key to Empower women’s world over is only by providing them with education. I think education in India or anywhere else in the world is a step forward. Gopika is fortunate that she’s soon going to be studying at La Trobe which is a fantastic university and I’m glad she’s getting this opportunity to do a PhD on her research. I admire Gopika’s dedication and determination. This scholarship will enable her to travel to La Trobe in Melbourne, Australia where she will pursue her dreams of helping to improve India’s agriculture sector. I wish her well.”

Tulsi Kumar has delivered some of the biggest hits last year. While on one hand, she had foot-tapping tracks like O Saki Saki and Ankhiyon Se Goli Maare, she drove soulful renditions like Tera Ban Jaunga, Enni Soni and others with equal aplomb. It’s been a great start for her in 2020 with Lagdi Lahore Di from Street Dancer 3D and Dus Bahaane 2.0 from Baaghi 3 topping charts and getting her a lot of love from the audience. Now, she is taking it a notch higher as she lends her voice to the reprised version of the much loved romantic anthem from Malang — Phir Na Milen Kabhi.

It was Tulsi’s idea to come up with the reprised version of the heartbreak number and she’s channelized her innermost emotions for the same.

The original song has around 20 million views on YouTube already. Tulsi asserts, “Honestly when I heard the song Phir Na Milen Kabhi from Malang, I fell in love with the melody, the intensity, and the lyrics. It’s a very, very beautifully written and composed song. It’s a situation that everyone has been through in their lives. I instantly connected with the song and I remember calling the composer and singer Ankit (Tiwari) and telling him the song is a beautiful composition. I also told him I’ll be surprising him very soon. I had it in my mind that I want to render this song because there are certain songs you just can’t get out of your head because of the way it makes you feel. I wanted to do a cover for this one, so that’s how the idea of the reprised version came about.”

Tulsi features in the track and has beautifully emoted throughout the track. She also shares that today we are in a time when the world is going through a crisis because of the Coronavirus outbreak. She feels at such a piece of time music can soothe the human soul and offer some calming effect.

The reprised version of Phir Na Milen Kabhi, sung by Tulsi Kumar with lyrics by Prince Dubey and music produced by Bharat Goel, has been directed by Shakti Hasija and is OUT now on T-Series’ YouTube channel.
