On Monday, the Bank of Baroda said that it had “technical reasons” for stopping the sale of Sunny Deol, the star from Gadar 2, who is also a sitting BJP MP. The action was taken a day after the bank published a notice inviting the public to the property auction to recoup its Rs 56 crore debt to Sunny Deol.
Since December 2022, the Gurdaspur MP has been in default on a Bank of Baroda debt for Rs 55.99 crore.
Gadar 2, Sunny Deol’s most recent film, has made over Rs 300 crore at the box office since its release last week.
The Bank of Baroda stated in a notification on Monday that the e-auction notice that was published on August 20 has been retracted for “technical reasons.”
The bank stated in the notice, Corrigendum to E Auction Sale Notice dated August 19, 2023, published in The Times of India Mumbai Edition (Pg. 3), dated August 20, 2023, with regards to Sale Notice in respect of Mr. Ajay Sing Deol Alias, Mr. Sunny Deol Stands Withdrawn due to Technical Reasons for the below-mentioned Property :All That Piece and Parcel of Land Bearing Survey No. 41 Hissa No. 5 (Pt) CTS No. 173 of Village Juhu Taluka Andheri Mumbai Suburban Dist, Admeas underneath a structure known as Sunny Villa situated at Gandhigram Road Juhu Mumbai 400049.”
The government-owned bank said on Sunday that it will hold an online auction for “Sunny Villa” in the city’s Juhu neighborhood on September 25. The Bank of Baroda, which has the property attached, set the reserve price for the auction at Rs 51.43 crore. Additionally, a 5.14 crore rupee earnest money deposit had been set.
The auction notice states that in addition to Sunny Villa, the 599.44 square meter property also contains Sunny Sounds, which is owned by the Deols and is the corporate guarantee to the loan, while Sunny’s actor-politician father Dharmendra is the individual guarantor of the debt.
According to the Securitization and Reconstruction of Financial Assets and Enforcement of Security Interest Act of 2002, the Deols had the option of paying the bank’s debts in full to halt the auction, according to the notification.
Since winning the Gurdaspur seat in Punjab in 2019 by a landslide majority against the incumbent Congress member Sunil Jhakar, Sunny Deol has been serving as the BJP’s representative there. Another actor, Vinod Khanna, represented the seat for the Congress for a long time.
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh responded to the most recent event in a post on X by saying, “Yesterday afternoon the nation got to know that Bank of Baroda had put up the Juhu residence of BJP MP Sunny Deol for e-auction since he has not paid up Rs 56 crore owed to the Bank. This morning, in less than 24 hours, the nation has gotten to know that the Bank of Baroda has withdrawn the auction notice due to ‘technical reasons’.” “Wonder who triggered these ‘technical reasons’?” he said.
