In an online poll released in London on Wednesday, Bollywood actor Hrithik Roshan was elected the Sexiest Asian Male of 2019 as well as the last decade. The 45-year-old actor with box office hits like War and Super 30 topped the annual Sexiest Asian Male ranking compiled by British newsweekly Eastern Eye based on votes from film fans around the world, the heat generated on social networking sites and wider impact throughout the year. Roshan scored a double victory over the last 10 years as well as top of the overall ranking.

“I would like to thank everyone who feels so and has voted for me; I am flattered,” said Roshan, as he stressed that he did not view it as an “achievement”. People who abuse animals are now facing up to five years of imprisonment under a tough new crackdown. Environment Secretary Michael Gove said the increase in the current six-month sentence was necessary to fight against cruelty. The move comes after a series of cases in which courts said that if they had the option they would have liked to impose tougher sentences. It involves occasions when a man bought a number of puppies just to brutally and systematically beat, choke and stab them to death.

The new legislation will also allow courts to deal with ruthless gangs involved in organized dog fights more effectively, the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said.

Mr. Gove said: “We are a nation of animal lovers and so we must ensure that those who commit the most shocking cruelty towards animals face suitably tough punishments.

“These plans will give courts the tools they have requested to deal with the most abhorrent acts.

“This is one part of our plan to deliver world-leading standards of animal welfare in the years ahead.”

Under the plans of the government, the courts will retain the ability to distribute an unlimited fine and in the future prohibit an offender from owning animals, but they will also be able to punish the worst cases harsher. The move will bring maximum sentences in England to fit Australia, Canada, the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland for animal cruelty.

The RSPCA’s David Bowles said: “We are thrilled that the Government has responded to calls from the RSPCA and members of the public to toughen up sentences for the worst animal abusers.

“We now feel that those who commit these acts will soon be receiving sentences that reflect the seriousness of their crime and hope this will act as a real deterrent against cruelty and neglect.

“The RSPCA picks up the pieces of animal cruelty every day of the year.

“Our inspectors regularly rescue animals from horrific circumstances of mistreatment, brutality, and neglect.

“It is only through the prosecutions that we take that many of the perpetrators are brought to justice.
